Official EIU ranking of 173 cities worldwide on quality of life metrics

Frequently Asked Questions

01
What is the Global Liveability Index?
The Global Liveability Index is an annual assessment that ranks 100 cities worldwide based on their quality of life. The index evaluates cities across five key categories: stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education, and infrastructure. Each city receives a score out of 100, with higher scores indicating better liveability conditions.
02
How are the scores calculated?
Each city is evaluated across five categories (stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education, and infrastructure) with scores ranging from 0-100. These category scores are then weighted and combined to produce an overall liveability score. The methodology involves qualitative and quantitative data assessment from various reliable sources, including government statistics, healthcare data, and cultural assessments.
03
What do the different categories measure?

Stability: Safety, crime rates, and political stability

Healthcare: Quality and accessibility of healthcare services

Culture & Environment: Cultural attractions, recreational opportunities, climate, and environmental quality

Education: Access to and quality of educational institutions

Infrastructure: Quality of roads, public transportation, housing, utilities, and digital infrastructure

04
How often is the Index updated?
The Global Liveability Index is updated annually, with the current data reflecting the 2025 assessment. This ensures that changes in urban environments, policies, and facilities are captured in the rankings.
05
How can I use the filtering options?

You can filter the data in several ways:

  • Use the search box to find specific cities or countries
  • Click on the category buttons to focus on particular aspects of liveability
  • Toggle between Table and Chart views for different visualizations
  • Sort any column in the table by clicking on the column headers
06
Why do some cities score high in certain categories but lower overall?
A city might excel in specific areas like healthcare or culture but face challenges in others such as stability or infrastructure. The overall score reflects this balance. For example, some cities might offer excellent cultural amenities but struggle with infrastructure challenges, resulting in a moderate overall ranking despite high scores in certain categories.
07
How can I compare multiple cities?
To compare specific cities, use the search box to filter for those cities of interest. In Table View, you can easily compare their scores across all categories. In Chart View, you can see how they rank in the overall top 10 or in specific categories if they're among the highest performers.
