Italy Investor Visa
Timeline

The Italian Investor Visa process is structured and transparent. From online application to residence card issuance, here’s what to expect step by step.

Note: Timeframes are indicative and may vary with consular workload and chosen investment route.

Day 0–30Pre-Approval

Apply for Nulla Osta online

Create an account on the official Investor Visa for Italy portal and upload your documents (passport, AML bank letter, proof of funds, CV, criminal record certificates, signed investment declaration). The IV4I Committee reviews and usually issues the Nulla Osta in ~30 days.

Months 2–6Consulate stage

Apply for Type-D Investor Visa

With your Nulla Osta, book an appointment at the Italian consulate in your country. Submit proof of accommodation, prior-year income (~€8,500+), and health cover. If approved, the 2-year Investor Visa is stamped into your passport.

ArrivalFirst 8 days

Enter Italy & apply for residence permit

Travel to Italy on your visa and file for a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 working days at the Questura. Provide biometrics, passport, and application kit.

≤ 90 daysFunding stage

Complete your investment

Deploy funds into your chosen route (startup, Italian company, donation, or government bonds). Upload proof (bank statements, transfer deeds, or donation deeds) to the portal. The IV4I Committee validates compliance — non-completion cancels the permit.

Year 2Renewal prep

Renew for 3 more years

Apply at least 60 days before expiry. You’ll need to maintain the original investment, secure a fresh Nulla Osta, and re-submit documents. Renewal grants a 3-year permit.

Year 5+Long-term status

Permanent residence & citizenship path

After 5 years of legal residence, you may apply for EU long-term resident status. After ~10 years (with integration and B1 Italian exam), you can apply for citizenship by naturalisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

01
What are the investment options for Italy’s Investor Visa?
Italy’s Investor Visa generally accepts: (a) €2,000,000 in Italian government bonds; (b) €500,000 in shares/quotas of an Italian company; (c) €250,000 in an innovative startup; or (d) a €1,000,000 philanthropic donation to projects of public interest. Amounts/routes are set by law—your attorney will confirm the current thresholds before filing.
02
Do I need to invest before I apply?
No. You first request a nulla osta (pre-approval) from the Investor Visa Committee. After receiving the visa and entering Italy, you typically have a short, defined window to complete the investment and convert to the residence permit.
03
Does the Investor Visa let me work or run a business in Italy?
Yes. Once you hold the Investor residence permit, you can live in Italy and carry out work or entrepreneurial activities, provided you maintain the qualifying investment and comply with immigration rules. (Note: other visas, like Elective Residency, have different work rules.)
04
Can I include family members on my application?
Yes. After your Investor permit is issued, family reunification allows your spouse/partner and dependent children (and, in specific cases, dependent parents) to obtain residence permits. Evidence of relationship and financial support is required.
05
What’s the path to permanent residency and citizenship in Italy?
The Investor permit is usually issued for 2 years and renewable for 3 years if you maintain the investment. After 5 years of legal residence you may qualify for the EU long-term residence permit. Citizenship by naturalization typically requires 10 years of legal residence (plus language/integration criteria).
06
Are there tax incentives for moving to Italy as an investor?
Potentially. New residents may evaluate Italy’s €100k flat tax on foreign income (and add-ons for family), or other regimes (e.g., impatriati for workers). These are elective and case-specific—coordinate with a licensed tax adviser alongside your immigration counsel.
